A guide to Golf Club Components

Golf clubs can be broken down into 3 components - heads, shafts and grips.

The best length of your club can easily be calculated but after that things start to get complicated as the options are mind-boggling.

The main design choices concern weight distribution, size and style. The weight of the head on good clubs should be balanced with the overall weight and length of the club for a smooth swing. Mixing and matching components is dangerous as it could lead to an unbalanced club.

Golf heads materials - The cheapest option is alloys (usually zinc and aluminium) which are fine for putters but not for other clubs that you want to last. Strengthened Aluminum is harder and often used on oversize drivers as it is light. Most golf heads are made from stainless steel although be aware of the massive variety of different quality and hardness of stainless steel available. Titanium heads are probably the ultimate long-lasting heads and hence costly.

Golf club shafts - The component of the golf club that can most affect your shots. There are really only 2 choices. Steel or Graphite. Graphite shafts have increased in quality and decreased in price but they still will not suit everybody. The range of shaft design and flexibility is massive and the only real way to find out what suits you is trial and error. Go to your local golf store or driving range and try some out.
